Hi, my name is Dr Warrick Bishop and I'm a cardiologist. Look, I want to take a moment to talk about the difference between association and causation.

Often we get caught up on association,  so and so had a heart attack, but he didn't smoke. He wasn't overweight. His cholesterol was okay. You wouldn't have thought it would have happened because we're dealing with what are associations, trying to understand it this way. If I told you that's speeding and alcohol were closely linked. In fact, associations to car accidents, we would all agree that you can speed and you can consume alcohol and drive and not necessarily have an accident. So they are clearly associated. But they are not causative because every time we drink or every time you speed, you would have a car accident if that were causative. Well, when it comes to coronary artery disease, we've got lots of associations, we understand, but we don't fully understand the causation. It's an interesting thing to get your head around, but it does mean we don't fully understand it. I hope that gives you food for thought.

I've done a podcast on the very topic below. If you're interested, please follow the link. Until next time, I wish you the very best. Don't confuse association with causation. Take care. Bye for now. And don't die from a heart attack. Goodbye.
