Hi, welcome to a Healthy Heart Minute. My name's Dr Warrick Bishop. Today, I'd like to talk about cholesterol. Well, what is it? We hear about it all the time. Well, cholesterol is a ring of carbon atoms that has a hydroxyl group hanging off the end. And if you're a chemist, you'd know it is a steroid alcohol. So, hopefully, that helps. But really, for you and I. What does it really do? Well, cholesterol is really important for building cell membrane. It's an intrical part of every cell in our body. It helps our body digest fats, so we find it in the bile acids. It's part of what helps transport our fat-soluble vitamins through the body. That's vitamins A, D, E, and K, you may have heard of those, and they're fat-soluble vitamins, and cholesterol helps move those. And the other thing cholesterol does is it's a precursor and helps in the formation of a number of hormones that the body produces through the adrenal gland, sex hormones, and some of the hormones that regulate blood pressure and sodium metabolism.
