Hi, my name is Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. Today, I want to touch on one that comes up fairly regularly.

Doc, if I have a zero calcium score, can I stop taking my cholesterol tablet? Well, this is a really tricky one. Thing on a cholesterol tablet for a long period of time and then get a zero score. Well, the cholesterol tablet must be the cause of your zero score. So why would you stop it? All our research tells us, however, that if you've not been on a cholesterol lowering agent and you found to have a zero school, then in general terms you're very low risk of an event over the next three to five years. The guarantee for that becomes greater the older you are.

What do we do then? Well, my preference is to sort of say to people the cholesterol will probably end up in the arteries if it is really high. And it's probably not a bad idea to modify that risk into the future. But some people like to choose to come back and reimage at a short time interval to make sure nothing is changing and avoid taking the medication, but except a slight exposure to X-ray radiation.

Well, it's an interesting area. I've put together a podcast covering aspects around that. I think you find it interesting. Click on that link below and have a listen. For now, however, I'm going to wish you the very best. Take care and bye for now.
