Hi, my name is Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. Today, I'd like to touch on acute cardiac failure.

Now, this is a medical emergency. It is a scary phenomenon. The individual feels like they are literally drowning in the fluids and secretions collecting in their lungs. They're distress from breathing. They're gasping. They have air hunger. They end up in an accident emergency. They'll get oxygen, they'll have blood taken. They'll have intravenous lines put in. They'll have therapy to offload the heart. And all this will happen as quick as possible because this really is a condition where the heart just stopped doing its job and fluid is accumulating in the lungs, causing a great deal of distress.
