Hi, my name is Dr. Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute.

Low blood pressure is almost ubiquitous. At least 20 to 30% of all Australians are affected by this condition. Some of those individuals have very difficult to treat elevated blood pressure, just not responsive to therapy. Well, is there anything else we can do?

Turns out there probably is. If we evaluate the arteries, going to the kidney, it turns out there's fine fibers and network of nerves going out to the kidney, which are part of the sympathetic nervous system, which drive blood pressure. Well, there's been fantastic work to evaluate whether we can eradicate, interrupt those nerves going to the kidney along those renal arteries. And it seems to be a very positive intervention with real promise for the future. That's called renal artery denervation.
