Hi, my name is Dr. Warrick Bishop and I'm a cardiologist. Welcome to my Healthy Hot Minute. This minute is about what can lower cholesterol.

Of course, we use medications. But a lot of people really want to know what are the agents can they use, what supplements might be available and what should they be taking if perhaps they don't tolerate the cholesterol lowering therapies.

Well, there are a number of nutraceuticals, vitamins, etcetera, which might be beneficial. I've got a podcast with Dr. Karen Costner on that very topic, and we go into that in some detail, but very simply, things like Berberine has been shown to be beneficial, but it's not easy to know which preparation to get.

Bergamot has also been shown to be beneficial. Again, which preparation to get is not clear. Red yeast, red rice yeast, is also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. But as far as that being a supplement, it's actually the origin of what we use in Statin therapy anyway, and if that's for people who are Statin intolerant might not be the best selection. Nonetheless, there are a number of things we can do around nutraceuticals to try and help lower cholesterol.

Check out the podcast. From the Healthy Heart Network, wishing you live as well as possible, for as long as possible. Until next time. Take care and bye for now.
