Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. This minute is about what causes heart attack.

It accounts for about one in four to one in five deaths in Australia, so it's pretty significant. And really, what happens is at a cellular level, within the arteries, there is rupture of plaque. There's mixing of the blood and the contents of the plaque, and that triggers off a clot formation, because the contents of the blood just shouldn't be in contact with the contents of the plaque. As a clot forms, it blocks off the artery. Sudden blockage of blood flow to a piece of heart muscle by blocking an artery is what is we call a heart attack, and that can have significant consequences.
