Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute. This minute is about the cholesterol controversy.

You can't go five minutes without hearing something on the news or social media, about whether cholesterol is good for you, bad for you, or whether statins are good or bad. There is clearly confusion.

I think that's really important to try and get your head around. We know that we lower cholesterol and many people who feel fine. So, immediately by giving medications to people who otherwise feel well, we're setting ourselves up for expectations and the possibility of side effects. It's a complicated story.

We need to find the people who really need to be on medication and know that they're getting real benefit over and above potential side effect.
