Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute.
I'm a cardiologist and a large component of what I deal with is coronary artery disease. Well, what is that? It's basically a build up of cholesterol or plaque within the arteries that progresses to a degree, that then causes problems for that person.
Well, how does that cholesterol get there?
We think about this quite a lot. You can think about it in terms of raised cholesterol, giving rise to an environment, if you like, for plaque formation. A bit like living by the sea, creates an environment for rust formation in your car. Does cholesterol get into the arteries by leeching from inside the artery into the wall, or does it get delivered by blood vessels that actually supply the wall of the artery?
It's a complicated space, and to be honest, I don't think we fully understand it.
